Israel “Izzy” Klein is a principal at Podesta Group, where he spearheads government relations and media outreach efforts for a host of global financial services, technology, telecommunications and energy clients.
Izzy has led a coalition of small start up technology companies during the consideration of the Dodd Frank Act; quarterbacked a comprehensive legislative effort to pass the JOBS Act in 2012; and is a go-to resource for organizations with complex political and high profile policy challenges. The New York Times, Politico, Bloomberg News, and The Boston Globe, among others, have sought Izzy’s political and policy expertise on the record.
Before joining Podesta Group, Izzy was a senior communications strategist and policy adviser for leading members of the US Senate and House, including Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Rep. Ed Markey (D-MA). Izzy was the Deputy Staff Director for Communications for the Joint Economic Committee (JEC), chaired by Sen. Schumer. In that role, Izzy had a front row seat to the start of the economic crisis and helped tackle crucial issues, including the housing and credit crisis, energy policy, sovereign wealth funds and tax and trade policy. He was previously Sen. Schumer’s communications director, assisting the third-ranking Democrat in the Senate with his work on the Senate Finance, Banking, Housing and Urban Development and Judiciary Committees.
Izzy sharpened his legislative strategy skills working for Rep. Markey in a number of senior roles, including national finance director, press secretary, legislative assistant and senior communications adviser. He assisted the congressman’s work as a senior member of the House Committees on Energy and Commerce, Homeland Security, and Natural Resources, where he gained an in-depth understanding of the telecommunications, energy, and homeland security arenas.
A native of West Orange, New Jersey, Izzy holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University. He is on the board of directors of the Junior State of America Foundation, a national civics and leadership organization for high school students; serves on the Strive DC Board of Directors, a local DC job training non-profit; and is a partner with the Truman National Security Project.
Izzy lives with his wife Sarah and their twins in Chevy Chase, MD.
