Developing Creative Funding Strategies to Secure Federal Dollars

  • Government Relations

A nonprofit collaboration between a respected university and two top medical centers hired the Podesta Group to help develop a funding strategy to secure federal dollars for the organization’s research and clinical trials.

Develop an FY 2009 defense appropriations request to support the institute's research, which could ultimately benefit the hundreds of thousands of soldiers returning from Middle East conflicts with Traumatic Brain and Spinal Cord Injury. We then solidified working relationships between the organization and top Pentagon officials; this has yielded the Pentagon’s recommendations for getting soldiers to normal thermia after injury, in line with our client’s groundbreaking hypothermal research. The Podesta Group also secured high-ranking Pentagon official site visits to the organization’s facilities.

For the first time, a $35 million funding pot was created in Department of Defense to benefit spinal cord injury research. In addition, the importance of spinal cord injury research was highlighted at a special hearing on Traumatic Brain Injury and Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome and a congressional invitation for the client to participate in the annual Brain Injury Awareness Fair on Capitol Hill was issued.
