Putting a Local Face on National Issues

One of the leading providers of private, for-profit postsecondary education called on the Podesta Group to provide crisis communications counsel and hands-on government relations expertise after being thrust into the spotlight in a national media and policy crisis. We initiated a comprehensive communications plan and an all-out, shoe-leather government relations campaign to educate every member of the House Education Committee about the positive aspects of the industry. We engaged targeted Members of Congress not just on Capitol Hill, but also in their home districts by facilitating a series of site visits to give Members a firsthand look at the schools they represented and the students that benefited. We also created a monthly e-newsletter highlighting our client’s activities as well as the achievements of students and faculty around the country.

The Podesta Group took this client from that initial swirl of controversy and transformed the company’s brand in Washington into one of influence and credibility with key policymakers on both sides of the aisle. In addition to the industry receiving praise from House Education Committee leaders, we were also successful in achieving our client’s number one priority – the permanent repeal of a rule on distance learning that could have negatively impacted our client’s future growth.
