John Shank is a senior strategist at the Podesta Group. He plays an integral role in both the firm’s appropriations practice and national security and international policy practice. John has twenty-five years of experience as a staffer for the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. Most recently, he was the lead minority staffer for the Defense Subcommittee and Select Intelligence Oversight Panel with the House Appropriations Committee under Full Committee Ranking Member Jerry Lewis (R-CA) and Subcommittee Ranking Member C.W. “Bill” Young (R-FL). He also served as Majority Staff Director/Clerk of the Defense Subcommittee under Congressman Young.
Prior to his tenure with the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, John was the Staff Director/Clerk for the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Foreign Operations, Export Financing, and Related Programs, serving under Chairmen Jim Kolbe (R-AZ) and Sonny Callahan (R-AL). He also served as Staff Director/Clerk of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and State, the Judiciary and Related Agencies under Chairman Warren Rudman (R-NH) and as lead Republican staffer under Ranking Member Pete Domenici (R-NM). His policy experience covers everything from defense, intelligence, and international affairs to law enforcement, trade and natural resources.
